“Henrietta, the Musical": Over 6,000 Students Experiencing History at the National Theater

“Henrietta, the Musical” concluded its third season at the National Theater in September 2022, offering students a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in a performance that has made history in Costa Rica. With a live orchestra and 25 actors portraying nearly 50 characters in this 100% original production, the show welcomed over 4,000 students from institutions across the country. These students add to the 2,000 who attended performances in September 2021 and March 2022.

As part of the work of the Asociación Cultural Teatro Espressivo (ACTE) and its program "To the Theater with Espressivo," students from across the country have revisited key historical events of the 1940s in Costa Rica through this Broadway-style musical, creating a unique and educational experience.

Thanks to the support of Demain Foundation, through its management of key partnerships and pursuit of corporate and institutional donations, over 3,600 students from all provinces of Costa Rica enjoyed this world-class production free of charge. Additionally, more than 2,600 students attended the performance at a discounted rate, as part of ACTE’s social programs. From the start, the student audience has been a priority for this production, written by Denise Duncan with music by Jaime Gamboa and Bernardo Quesada. The musical highlights the historical importance of the era it portrays, including social guarantees, women’s suffrage, and the abolition of the military.

The student audience has been from the beginning one of the priority audiences of the show, written by Denise Duncan with music by Jaime Gamboa and Bernardo Quesada, given the historical importance of the time in which the musical takes place (social guarantees, women's suffrage, abolition of the army, etc.).

Quality Culture for Everyone

Directed by Luis Carlos Vásquez, “Henrietta, the Musical” is one of the largest theatrical productions in recent years, created with the purpose of preserving Costa Rica’s history and identity.

In turn, “To the Theater with Espressivo” is an initiative that opens spaces for new audiences to attend high-quality performances and reflect on artistic creation. This project aligns with the comprehensive vision of the Demain Foundation, which develops programs to positively impact the educational community, in this case, using art as a tool for social transformation.
