Ostional Accessible: An Inclusive Window to Nature and Life

In a meaningful step toward equity in enjoying Costa Rica’s natural heritage, the community of Ostional celebrated the inauguration of a new ocean-access boardwalk, built by ProParques Association, an ally of Demain Foundation. This project enables people with disabilities or reduced mobility to witness one of the planet’s most iconic natural spectacles: the mass nesting of sea turtles.

This initiative aligns with ProParques’ mission, which since its founding in 2006, has worked to enhance visitor experiences in Costa Rica’s protected wild areas and strengthen the capacities of park rangers.

Ostional Accessible becomes the fourth such boardwalk in Costa Rica, joining similar efforts in Cahuita National Park, Manuel Antonio National Park, and Junquillal Beach. All were made possible thanks to a collective commitment by companies, communities, and volunteers who, since 2018, have gathered type 2, 4, and 5 plastics to be transformed into the raw material used for these sustainable and inclusive structures.

A Natural Spectacle of Global Importance

Ostional Beach, located in the Guanacaste province, is internationally recognized as one of the few places where the mass nesting of olive ridley sea turtles (Lepidochelys olivacea) occurs. During these events, thousands of turtles emerge from the ocean simultaneously to lay eggs, creating a breathtaking and unique scene.

While similar phenomena can be seen in Gahirmatha (India), La Escobilla (Mexico), and Nancite Beach (Costa Rica), Ostional stands out due to the consistency of these events and the strength of the community-led conservation model that protects and manages the area.

With the new accessible boardwalk, individuals of all ages and abilities can witness this natural wonder without barriers—promoting environmental education, biodiversity appreciation, and universal access to nature.

Allies for Inclusion and the Environment

Even before Demain Foundation was formally established, its founder was already actively supporting ProParques. Today, this alliance is stronger than ever, uniting inclusion, sustainability, and environmental education as pillars of social transformation.

At Demain Foundation, we believe that nature should be a right accessible to all.Projects like Ostional Accessible reflect our commitment to a world where access to beauty and knowledge is not limited by physical mobility but rather driven by a shared will to build fairer and more humane environments.
