Collaborative Work Was Key to Major Environmental Achievements in 2025

In alliance with Demain Foundation, the Costa Rican organization ProParques ProParques consolidated during 2025 a year of major progress in environmental conservation, ecological restoration, accessibility, and climate action. From the strengthening of protected wild areas to the training of communities and forest firefighters, the projects implemented reflect a comprehensive commitment to nature and the people who protect it.

Environmental management for the future

Thanks to the support of Demain Foundation and multiple national and international allies, ProParques led important projects together with key institutions such as SINAC, Asociación Costa Rica por Siempre, WWF, Fundación UCR and the Canada Fund for Local Initiatives, among others.

Among the main achievements are:

  • Management and monitoring plans in national parks such as Braulio Carrillo, Carara and in the Lower Basin of the Tempisque River, strengthening biodiversity protection and the sustainable management of natural resources.
  • 20.7 hectares rehabilitated and restored in the Cipancí National Wildlife Refuge, with support from CEMPRO.
  • More than 1,900 volunteers mobilized in 58 workdays in 12 protected areas of the country, together with 23 partner companies that reinforce the link between conservation and corporate responsibility.

Women and communities leading change

One of the most inspiring milestones was the program “Women in Action, Fighting Forest Fires”, which trained 30 female forest firefighters in the areas of Cóbano, Lepanto and Paquera, with support from Canada Fund for Local Initiatives.

For 2026, the program will expand to Indigenous communities near La Amistad International Parkpromoting the participation of Indigenous women in fire management and forest protection.

Asimismo, dos humanitarian missions to Canada mobilized more than 200 Costa Rican forest firefightersto support wildfire response efforts, demonstrating Costa Rica’s excellence and solidarity in international cooperation.

Accessibility and circular economy: nature for everyone

The Official Plastic Caps Collection Campaign continues to be a symbol of environmental innovation. In 2025, the accessibility project at La Amistad International Park – Pittier Sector was inaugurated, becoming the country’s first accessible mountain national park.

The project included 60 linear meters of walkway, picnic tables, and a Joelette adventure chair, ensuring safe and natural experiences for people with disabilities.

The next phase of the campaign will take place at Juan Castro Blanco Water National Park, where recycled plastic will be transformed into sensory and inclusive infrastructure —walkways, railings, tactile signage, and bridges— integrating universal accessibility, environmental education, and circular economy.
