Solidarity Knows No Borders: Costa Rican Wildland Firefighters Support Canada in Fighting Wildfires

As part of Costa Rica’s commitment to environmental conservation and international collaborative efforts, a brigade of 92 Costa Rican wildland firefighters traveled to Alberta, Canadá, to assist in the prevention and control of wildfires during the summer of 2024. This mission is part of a strategic alliance between ProParques, the Ministry of Environment and Energy (MINAE) and Canadian environmental agencies, and represents a strong example of binational environmental cooperation.

For one month, the Costa Rican firefighters worked shoulder to shoulder with their Canadian counterparts during one of the most critical periods for wildfire management in the Northern Hemisphere. In addition to their technical expertise, the Costa Ricans contributed a vision based on prevention, biodiversity protection, and respect for rural communities—fundamental pillars of Costa Rica’s conservation model.

The initiative received extensive media coverage in both countries, highlighting the capacity, professionalism, and dedication of the deployed teams.

Women in Action: Growing Female Leadership in Environmental Protection

In Tempisque Conservation Area, the Wildland Women’s Camp, was held—an initiative that brought together 30 women leaders from various rural communities to receive intensive training in fire suppression, prevention techniques, and environmental leadership.

This effort responds to the growing need to include more women in active wildfire risk management, recognizing their key role in community resilience and the defense of natural heritage. Thanks to the technical support from Canada and the backing of ProParques, an NGO allied with Demain Foundation—the participants acquired practical skills that will strengthen their response capacity in their local communities.

The “Women in Action” program not only strengthens gender equity in the environmental sector but also promotes economic autonomy and transformative leadership in rural areas, aligning with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

At Demain Foundation, we believe that climate change is fought through community action, international cooperation, and the empowerment of those who protect our ecosystems with vocation, knowledge, and courage.
